CSF testing in cases of suspected Lyme Neuroborreliosis

The NVRL have been advised by the Lyme Disease Service in Public Health England, Porton that a contemporaneous serum sample must accompany all CSF samples requiring testing for Lyme Neuroborreliosis. The serum must be taken on the same day or in extremis within a day either side of the CSF sample.

Please note that CSF samples received in the NVRL without an accompanying serum specimen will not be referred for testing, a minimum volume of 0.5ml (for both serum and CSF) is required.

Our our on call service provider is unable to provide a full service due to the current weather conditions. The “out of hours” service for advice and the investigation of urgent specimens can now be contacted directly on 087 980 6448 until further notice.

The NVRL is open today with a restricted service. However, in light of the severe weather warning, and in the interests of the safety of our staff, we will be closing at 1300 hours. Please call (01) 716 4401 to discuss urgent test requests. An out of hours service will then be available. The laborarory will also stay closed tomorrow
