Further to our previous correspondence in relation to the above issue, please accept our apologies for the delay implementing same.

Whilst this move was scheduled for March, we had to postpone it due to unexpected difficulties accessing kits. We believe this issue has now been resolved. As such, from June 27th onwards, the NVRL will screen all Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) specimens received for testing using the FTlyo Viral meningitis real-time PCR assay from Fast-Track Diagnostics (FTD).

The FTD assay offers equivalent or improved sensitivity for all of the viruses included in our current laboratory developed test, and also includes Parechovirus. As such, our standard, CSF screen will now comprise Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2, Varicella Zoster Virus, Enterovirus and Parechovirus.

As before, additional viral pathogens that can infect the central nervous system are available on request.

The NVRL IT department will provide specific information including relevant test request codes to all users who interact with us electronically.

Please contact the NVRL at 01 716 1256 if you would like to discuss this matter further.
