Changes to NVRL testing, regarding Measles IgM and Rubella IgM

Measles:

Following a review of testing at NVRL, it was noted that Measles IgM investigations were being requested as part of a general viral screen.  Measles IgM testing should be performed when there is a high index of suspicion that the patient has an acute measles infection.  In addition, an oral fluid sample should be collected for measles RNA, to facilitate genotyping to identify transmission pathways

Where measles immune status is queried, Measles IgG will be tested (i.e. Measles IgM will no longer be tested on these samples)

Rubella:

As Rubella IgM testing is not routinely indicated, the test code SRAM should not be requested on paediatric samples.   If congenital rubella is suspected the NVRL should be contacted to discuss the most appropriate samples to collect and the most appropriate investigations.

IgM tests will not be carried out as part of occupational Health Screening.
