Customer Notification: Unavoidable Delay in CMV IgG Avidity testing

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Date of notice: 08/11/2024

Test code:  SCAV

Test: CMV IgG Avidity

 Reason for Notification

UCD NVRL has been informed by its supplier that CMV IgG Avidity test kits will not be available for a number of weeks.

Samples that are awaiting this test will be stored appropriately and testing will be completed once kits are back in stock.

UCD NVRL apologises sincerely for this delay which is entirely outside our control.

Clinical Relevance (Please Note)

CMV IgG avidity assays can be helpful in distinguishing between recent (within the last 3 months) and distant (more than 3 months previously) infections.

However, in the setting of a suspected primary infection, an evolving IgM & IgG response – over a 2 week period – is often sufficient to confirm the diagnosis.

In immunocompromised individuals, or if antiviral therapy is being considered, then CMV DNA testing may be a more appropriate test to guide management.

Changes to Reporting of Results

CMV serology (IgM & IgG) results will continue to be issued as normal (albeit interim) reports.  The IgG avidity result will be issued as part of a final report when available.

Please contact the Clinical Line on 01-7164401 if you have any queries.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
