Routine molecular respiratory screen

As of May 12th 2014 the NVRL molecular screen for respiratory pathogens will be extended to reflect the seasonal variation in circulating respiratory viruses. The routine respiratory screen will include the following

  • Influenza A
  • Influenza B
  • Parainfluenza 1
  • Parainfluenza 2
  • Parainfluenza 3
  • Parainfluenza 4
  • Adenovirus
  • Human Metapneumovirus
  • RSV

Please note the specimen of choice for investigation of respiratory illness in hospitalised patients is a secretory specimen such as a nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA), sputum, or broncholaveolar lavage (BAL)
