Ebola virus RNA testing is available at the NVRL 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Testing is in accordance with guidance from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. Appropriate risk assessment should be carried out before collecting specimens for laboratory testing.
The preferred sample type for Ebola RNA testing is EDTA blood (5ml). Clotted blood samples are a suitable alternate. Arrangements for testing must be made directly with the clinical team at the NVRL. The sample should arrive at the NVRL ideally within 12 hours of collection. Therefore, it is adviseable for the courier company and the clinical team to arrange that the specimen is collected as late as possible prior to the arrival of the courier.
