CN-24-19: CMV serological investigation of paediatric samples at UCD NVRL

From 1st September 2024, UCD NVRL will cease to investigate Dried Blood Spots (DBS)/Guthrie card samples for anti-CMV IgM. 

 In line with UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations*, DBS samples will continue to be investigated for the presence of CMV DNA by nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT).

 Please note that the specimen of choice for the investigation of congenital CMV infection in a patient less than 3 weeks old is a URINE sample, for the presence of CMV DNA by NAAT.

Customer Notification: Change of assay for the detection and quantification of EBV DNA

Date of change: 29th July 2024

Test code: AEBV

The current real-time PCR assay for the detection and quantification of EBV DNA is manufactured by Artus however this assay has now been discontinued. The NVRL will switch to an assay provided by Altona Diagnostics.

The Altona assay reports in International Units per ml (IU/ml) compared to copies/ml in the Artus assay. Reporting in IU/ml aids standardisation of reporting between different assays and laboratories.

Cessation of Out of Hours Molecular testing for Measles

UCD NVRL wishes to inform its users that the provision of Out-of-Hours (OOH) Measles Molecular testing will cease at the end of June 2024. The last date for OOH testing will be 29th June 2024.

 

The provision of serological investigations out of hours will continue.

About the NVRL

The UCD National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) provides a diagnostic and reference service for clinicians investigating viral infections throughout Ireland. The laboratory is affiliated to the University College Dublin School of Medicine. The NVRL have provided a virology diagnostic service to the Irish health service for over forty years.

We currently perform over 700,000 tests annually, involving some 120 tests for 40 different pathogens and provide specialist reference services which have been developed as a result of medical and technical expertise built over many years. We are proud to offer our service users accredited tests in line with national and international “best practice”.

Hours of service

Normal Opening Hours:        Monday to Friday:       8.00 a.m. - 5.30 p.m.

The laboratory routinely operates from 8.00 am to 6.00 p.m. daily but officially opens from 8.00am to 5.30 pm, Monday to Friday.

The NVRL is accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) to undertake testing as detailed in the Schedule bearing the Registration Number 326MT, in compliance with the International Standard ISO/IEC 15189:2012 "Medical laboratories - Requirements for quality and competence".
